Origin: Released on 1 August 2025 and part of the D.O.N. Issue #7 line. This release has a synthetic upper in Core Black/Carbon/Core Black. The D.O.N. line is adidas basketball's other signature project, running in numbered issues rather than volumes, and the seventh issue continues a line built around a guard who plays through contact. adidas has made shoes for named athletes since Adolf Dassler was hand building event specific spikes in Herzogenaurach and watching how people actually moved, and the company's basketball authority was established when the Superstar arrived in 1969 and was reportedly on more than 75 percent of NBA feet by 1973. Black Carbon is the least decorative way to present a signature shoe: a dark upper with a darker grey structural detailing, so what you notice is the geometry of the platform rather than a graphic. It is a colourway for playing in.

Construction: Signature guard shoes are engineered around stopping rather than running, so the important parts are the outsole pattern, the midfoot lockdown and the width of the base. This is a textile and synthetic upper with soft zones at the flex points and rigid zones where the foot loads sideways, over a rubber outsole cut to bite hardwood under lateral pressure. adidas's cushioning approach since Boost launched in its running range in 2013 has favoured energy return over plush softness, and its basketball platforms follow that logic, so expect a responsive rather than a cloudlike ride. Black on carbon grey means scuffs from court contact sit almost invisible, which for a shoe that will be played in every week is a functional benefit rather than a styling one.

Utility: On court, lace to the top eyelet and use a cushioned crew sock, since a guard's shoe depends on heel lock to work as designed. Off court, recipe one: black fleece sweatpants with a grey hoodie and a puffer, an all dark stack where the carbon detailing is the only variation. Recipe two: dark denim with a plain white tee and a bomber, using the shoe's bulk as deliberate contrast against a slim leg. Fit is performance snug and true to size, with minimal give in the synthetic zones. Keep them off concrete to preserve the traction pattern. Wipe the outsole before every game so dust does not kill grip, air the insoles between sessions, and never machine wash them.

Influence: adidas basketball has two distinct histories. The archive one belongs to the Superstar and its shell toe, worn by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and George Gervin, then taken up wholesale by hip hop and given a second life adidas never planned, culminating in Run-DMC signing the first endorsement deal between a musical act and an athletic company. The current one belongs to signature athletes, where James Harden is the brand's marquee name. Numbered signature issues like this one sit firmly in the second history, sold to players rather than to collectors of heritage silhouettes. Blacked out, it is the version that gets bought to be used.
