Origin: Released on 18 July 2025 and part of adidas's Samba Jane line. This release has a leather upper in Collegiate Green/Gum 3/Cream White. Samba Jane is the Mary Jane reading of adidas's oldest football training shoe, a strap across the instep replacing the lacing that has defined the silhouette since it was made for players training on frozen ground. That is a bigger change than it looks, because it moves the Samba out of sportswear grammar and into something closer to a school shoe or a ballet flat, without touching the sole or the profile. Collegiate Green with gum is the most collegiate way to say it: a deep, slightly blue leaning green against a warm caramel outsole, a pairing that belongs to sports club colours rather than to fashion palettes. The result is a shoe that reads feminine and athletic at once, which is exactly the space Originals has been mining.

Construction: The base build is Samba: leather upper, suede T shaped toe overlay for abrasion resistance where a footballer wears through first, and a gum rubber outsole with almost no stack height. The Jane conversion replaces the lace stay with an instep strap, so entry is quicker and the fit is set rather than adjustable across the arch. The Three Stripes still run through the sidewall, stitched rather than printed, doing structural work as well as branding, which is how adidas has used the mark since buying it from Karhu Sports in 1952. Collegiate Green sits on the leather body with the toe overlay and heel patch picking up the contrast, and the gum sole warms the whole thing. Expect a flat, direct ride and very little cushioning.

Utility: Recipe one: cream or ecru wide leg trousers with a fine cotton knit, where the green becomes the only colour in the outfit and the gum sole ties back to any tan leather you are carrying. Recipe two: a mid length pleated skirt in black with opaque tights and an oversized denim jacket, the strap keeping the shoe from looking sporty under a skirt. Samba lasts run narrow and long, so consider a half size down and expect the leather to widen rather than lengthen. Wear these with no show or thin ribbed socks; thick socks fight the strap. Keep the suede toe dry, brush it with a crepe brush, and clean the gum sole with an eraser sponge before the caramel goes grey.

Influence: The Samba's second life came from the same place most adidas crossovers do, which is wearers rather than campaigns. adidas entered culture through sport and then through music it did not pay for, when Run-DMC wrote My Adidas unpaid before signing the first endorsement deal between a musical act and an athletic company. The terrace and casual dressing tradition that made the Superstar and the Stan Smith a base layer did the same for the Samba decades later. The Jane variant is how that reached a wardrobe the original silhouette was never cut for, and green with gum is the version that looks deliberate rather than default.
