Origin: Released on 15 August 2025 and part of the Adizero Ubersonic line. This release has a textile upper in Orbit Grey/Orbit Grey/Core Black. Y-3 is the line where adidas hands its engineering to Yohji Yamamoto and lets him decide what a sports shoe should look like when nobody is keeping score. It is the oldest of the designer partnerships adidas effectively invented, and it works because Yamamoto treats performance parts as raw material rather than as marketing. The Adizero Ubersonic comes from the tennis side of adidas, where adizero has always meant stripped weight and quick direction change. Rendering it in Orbit Grey and Black removes the last of the tournament energy: no team colour, no sponsor logic, just a court shoe reduced to its structure. This is the Ubersonic as an object, and the grey is doing more work than it looks like it is.

Construction: adizero is adidas at its most weight obsessed, the label the company reserves for shoes where every gram is argued over, and on the racing side it runs thermoplastic polyester elastomer midsoles with embedded carbon rods rather than one rigid plate. A tennis derived Ubersonic inherits the same philosophy applied differently: a low, locked down chassis built for lateral load, with the upper structured to hold the foot when you push off sideways rather than forward. The Y-3 treatment usually reworks panelling and materials while leaving the performance geometry intact. Orbit Grey and Black across the whole upper means you read the layering and the seams instead of a logo, and the Three Stripes fold into the construction rather than sitting on top of it.

Utility: Two ways. First, all in on the tone: charcoal wide trousers, black crew neck, grey outerwear, and the shoe as the lightest value in a monochrome stack. Second, break it: black tailored trousers with a cropped hem and a white shirt, so the grey upper stops the fit looking like a uniform. This is a city shoe with a court chassis, so it rewards walking days and long evenings but is not a training pair. Tennis derived lasts hold the midfoot tight, so if you have a high instep, loosen the middle eyelets before assuming the size is wrong. Grey shows scuffing at the toe, so wipe after wear and keep it out of standing water.

Influence: adidas opened the door on the designer sneaker partnership as a category, and Y-3 with Yohji Yamamoto was the proof of concept that everything else followed, from Stella McCartney since 2004 through Jeremy Scott, Raf Simons and Alexander Wang. What Y-3 changed was the direction of the borrowing: instead of a fashion house putting a sneaker in a lookbook, a sportswear company let a designer rebuild its performance archive. Grey and black is the register that partnership does best, because it strips the shoe of team, season and sponsor and leaves only shape. It is the version of adidas that reads at a gallery opening and at a tennis club without changing its story.
