Origin: Designed by Kanye West and released on 10 June 2022 as part of the Yeezy Basketball line. This release has a primeknit upper. The Basketball Knit belongs to the last stretch of the adidas partnership, when the label pushed its knit language onto a court shape rather than a runner. It is the least typical thing in the catalogue for that reason: higher over the ankle, blunter at the toe, built to look like sports equipment rather than a lifestyle sneaker. Slate Azure keeps it from reading as costume, a washed blue grey that sits closer to the terrain names the label favoured, Moonrock and Desert Rat, than to any team colour. Kanye West founded the label in 2013 wanting to be treated as a designer with full control, and a basketball silhouette with no logo and a dusty blue knit is a fairly pure expression of that: the sport's shape without the sport's branding.

Construction: A knitted upper does the work, in the sock fit tradition the line established with Primeknit, which on a higher cut shape means it wraps the ankle instead of bracing it with padded collars and overlays. That is a fashion reading of a basketball shoe rather than a performance one, and worth knowing before you treat it as court footwear. The sole is a moulded unit and the shoe carries no visible logo, consistent with almost the entire adidas Yeezy range. Slate Azure runs across the knit and into the sole so the shape reads as one piece. Expect a close, stretchy fit through the forefoot, more ankle contact than you get from a low top, and a light shoe for its size.

Utility: A high cut knit in dusty blue needs a trouser that respects the ankle. First recipe: black tapered joggers with an elasticated cuff sitting just above the collar of the shoe, a black tee, a grey overshirt. Second recipe: straight leg mid grey trousers with no break, a navy crew, letting the blue read as tonal rather than accent. Occasion: casual street wear and travel, not competitive play, because this is a lifestyle interpretation of a court shape. Fit is stretchy through the forefoot and snug at the ankle, so people with high insteps should try before buying. Care: dry brush the knit, spot clean with mild soap, avoid soaking because knit uppers hold water and dry slowly, and keep them away from monsoon slush.

Influence: Yeezy's real influence was on how shoes are sold, not just how they look. The scarcity model turned drops into mainstream events, produced queue culture, bot buying and a resale economy, and made the line worth roughly two billion dollars a year to adidas at its peak. Late models like this one show the design vocabulary being extended into new categories after the runner shapes had been copied to exhaustion across the mass market. That extension was cut short: adidas terminated the partnership on 25 October 2022 after Kanye West made antisemitic public remarks the company stated were unacceptable, hateful and dangerous. Basketball derived Yeezy shapes therefore exist as a small, late and unfinished set.
