Origin: Designed by Peter Moore and part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Black/Green Frost/Black Raspberry/Green Strike. The Air Jordan 1 was never designed to be a lifestyle shoe. Peter Moore and Bruce Kilgore drew a basketball boot for a rookie Nike signed in October 1984, and Nike's internal target was around 3 million dollars over three years. The shoe passed 150 million and never left. Cutting the collar down is what let it keep going: the Low is the version that gets worn every day, in every size run, long after the numbered line moved on to Air, elephant print and patent leather. Fortune Fly is a grade school edition of that everyday shape, named for luck rather than for a team or a season. It is the founding silhouette used the way the founding silhouette actually gets used.

Construction: The Low keeps the 1's panelled construction: separate leather sections across toe, quarter and heel, a stitched Swoosh, a low cut collar, a foam midsole and a flat rubber outsole. There is no Air unit in the 1, because Air cushioning entered the line from the Air Jordan II onward, so the ride is firm and flat by design. That firmness is why the shoe holds its shape and why it creases into your foot instead of collapsing under it. The grade school pattern runs slightly slimmer than the adult one through the midfoot, so if you are sizing an adult foot into GS, go up rather than across, and break them in over a few short wears before a long day out.

Utility: Two ways to wear it. First, uniform: navy or black track pants with a taped side seam, a plain hoodie, and socks just above the collar so the ankle stays visible. Second, school clean: mid blue denim turned once at the hem, a striped rugby or polo, and the Low doing the quiet work underneath. This is a shape for daily wear rather than court, so treat the outsole as a street sole and expect wear at the outer heel first. Clean with a soft brush and mild soap on the leather, never a washing machine, and dry away from heat. If they are going out five days a week, rotate a second pair.

Influence: The 1 is the shoe sneaker collecting was built on. Nike's advertising with Spike Lee, directing and playing Mars Blackmon opposite Jordan, moved it out of sport and into film language, and rappers including 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z referenced Jordan and his sneakers on record. Original 1985 pairs have traded around 20,000 dollars on StockX, and the resale market the model anchors has been valued near 2 billion dollars. The history is not all clean: in the late 1980s the shoes were associated with robberies and assaults and some American schools banned them. A luck themed grade school Low is the friendliest possible end of that long story.
