Origin: Red is the Air Jordan colour. Chicago red alongside black and white functions as a brand palette in its own right, not a team reference borrowed for a season, and a make up that runs sport red and gym red together against off white is the line leaning fully into its own identity. The silhouette is Peter Moore's, drawn with Bruce Kilgore for the player Nike signed in October 1984 and released to the public on 1 April 1985. Two reds side by side is a harder trick than it sounds: they have to sit on different panels with enough separation that the shoe reads as designed rather than mismatched, which is exactly what the original panel structure allows.

Construction: Leather panels with the two red tones distributed across the toe, quarter, Swoosh and collar, off white carrying the base and the midsole so the reds have somewhere cool to sit against. Perforated toe box, foam midsole, rubber outsole. Red dyed leather is the trickiest surface in this palette for care, because it transfers onto light socks and onto other panels if you clean it wet and aggressive. Work dry where you can. The off white sections will yellow slightly with age, which most people accept as part of the look. Expect the crease across the toe to show as a lighter red line, which is normal for saturated dyes.

Utility: Two reds need quiet clothing. Black straight leg denim, a white tee and a black jacket gives you a clean frame where the shoe is the only saturated object. For something softer, off white or ecru trousers with a grey knit picks up the base colour and lets the reds glow rather than shout. Do not add a third red to the outfit. Fit is true to length. Wear dark socks in the first weeks if the lining is red, keep the off white panels away from dark denim, and clean the reds with a barely damp cloth rather than a soaked one so the dye stays put.

Influence: This palette is where the whole story sits. The Banned campaign was built around a league uniform policy requiring shoes to be at least 51 percent white, and the shoe actually cited was the Nike Air Ship prototype Jordan wore before the Air Jordan 1 released. Nike paid the 5,000 dollar per game fine and made advertising out of it rather than redesigning. Red and white Jordans have carried that reputation ever since, through Spike Lee's Mars Blackmon advertising and through rappers including 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z naming the shoes in their records.
