Origin: Released on 1 November 2025 and part of the Air Jordan 40 line. This release has a leather upper in Sail/Varsity Red/White/Black. The fortieth model is the current end of a numbered sequence that started when Nike signed a Chicago Bulls rookie on 26 October 1984 and put out a leather high top designed by Peter Moore with Bruce Kilgore. Four decades of that sequence turned a signature shoe into a design series with its own language, from Tinker Hatfield's elephant print on the third to patent leather on the eleventh and Flyknit uppers from the thirtieth onward. Putting Chicago on the fortieth is a deliberate closing of the loop: red, black and white are the colours the line was born in, and they function as brand colours in their own right alongside the number 23.

Construction: This is a current performance basketball build, which in this line means an engineered textile upper rather than stitched leather panels, structured containment through the midfoot and a cushioning setup tuned for repeated landings. The series moved to Flyknit uppers from the thirtieth model onward, brought in carbon fibre shank plates for torsional stiffness, and even experimented with removing laces entirely on the thirty third with a FastFit system, so the modern end of the range is engineering led rather than material led. Expect a close, sock like entry, a firm platform through the arch and almost no break in period. Textile uppers hold dirt rather than shedding it, so a white based Chicago execution needs regular light cleaning.

Utility: Treat this as the playing shoe it is. On court, wear compression tights under mesh shorts with a fitted top and lace to the last eyelet, since containment on a modern basketball last comes from the closure rather than from stiff panels.
