Origin: Designed by Tinker Hatfield and released on 2 March 2024 as part of the Air Jordan 5 line. This release has a suede upper in Army Olive/Solar Orange. The Air Jordan 5 belongs to the run Tinker Hatfield built after Nike handed him the line at the third model, the stretch where a basketball shoe became a design series with its own recognisable grammar. Olive takes that shoe into military territory, a colour with no relationship to Chicago red, black and white and no college affiliation, which frees it from the reference obligations most Jordan colourways carry. That matters on the 5, a model whose shark tooth midsole geometry and reflective tongue treatment make it one of the most graphically busy silhouettes in the catalogue. Olive quiets it down enough that the shape is what you notice, and that is a rarer experience with this model than you might expect.
Construction: The Retro programme reproduces the 5 rather than updating it, so you get the original proportions and Nike Air cushioning underfoot, standard in the line since the second model. Olive works well in practice because it is a mid tone that takes dust without looking dirty and darkens rather than fades with ordinary wear. Any napped or suede panelling on this model needs a brush rather than a cloth, since wiping flattens the nap and leaves a shine. The visible midsole will yellow with UV regardless of storage, and Nike has never published which polyurethane it uses, so treat any retro as something to wear and rotate rather than to keep sealed and assume will survive.
Utility: Two recipes. First, black tapered trousers with a black bomber, letting the olive read as the only earth tone against a hard outfit. Second, ecru or sand chinos with a brown knit, a full warm palette where the shoe settles in rather than standing out. The 5 is a taller shoe than a Retro 1 mid, so it needs a hem that stacks or stops clear of the collar. Size true to length with a snug midfoot. Brush napped panels after every wear, keep the pair out of rain, and clean the midsole separately with a soft eraser rather than a chemical cleaner.
Influence: Air Jordan is the shoe that made sneaker collecting a mass activity, with 1985 pairs trading around 20,000 dollars on StockX and a resale economy valued at roughly two billion dollars sitting on top of the line. The numbered models from the third onward are what sustain that, because each one introduced something the brand still uses: elephant print on the third, patent leather on the eleventh, carbon fibre shank plates and Kevlar reinforcement further down the line. Being part of the Hatfield sequence is what gives a 5 its standing, and a military colourway trades on the shape rather than on any single colour memory.
