Origin: Released on 1 November 2016 and part of the Jordan Lift Off line. This release has the White/White-Black-Gym Red colourway. Lift Off is a name that points at the house mark. The Jumpman is a silhouette of Jordan mid leap with legs split, created after Peter Moore had him recreate a pose in Bulls gear, and it has carried the brand since the Air Jordan III put it on the tongue. Before that the Wings logo, a basketball with wings, marked the earliest era. A shoe called Lift Off is playing with the same idea of flight that the brand has traded on since Nike signed its rookie on 26 October 1984. White with Gym Red is the Chicago half of the palette, red and white without the black, which reads brighter and more open than a full Bred makeup and puts the model in summer rather than winter.
Construction: This is a lifestyle build rather than a numbered retro, which is worth saying plainly. White carries the upper with Gym Red on the accents and branding, a two colour split that keeps the shape clean and gives the eye one place to land. Nike Air cushioning has run through the Jordan line since the Air Jordan II and remains the reason these silhouettes feel like Jordans underfoot rather than generic trainers. Style code AR4430 106 identifies this pair. A white based upper with red trim asks for maintenance: the red will hold its tone far longer than the white will hold its brightness, and that contrast is what makes a neglected pair look old fast.
Utility: Keep the red as the accent, not the theme. Recipe one: light wash denim, a white tee, a navy or olive overshirt, and the Gym Red trim ties into nothing but itself, which is the point. Recipe two: black shorts and a black tee for a hot day, where the white upper lifts the whole fit and the red stops it looking severe. Skip red trousers or a red jacket: it turns into a costume. True to size for most feet. Pre treat with a protector spray, brush white panels dry, and address scuffs immediately. Keep them off wet grass and out of long direct sun, which yellows white uppers faster than dirt does.
Influence: Red and white on a Jordan carries the Banned story whether the shoe intends it or not. The NBA's uniform rule required shoes to be at least 51 percent white and carried a 5,000 dollar per game fine, and Nike paid rather than redesign, building the Banned campaign around it and teaching the sneaker market that transgression sells. Around that sat Spike Lee's Mars Blackmon advertising and a wave of hip hop references from 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z. A Lift Off in Gym Red inherits the palette without the price of a retro, which is precisely the trade most people are looking for.
