Origin: Designed by Tinker Hatfield and released on 27 March 2023 as part of Nike's Air Max 1 line. This release has a suede upper in White/Neutral Grey/Black/University Red. The Air Max line arrived in 1987 and changed what a shoe was allowed to admit. Nike Air is a pressurised gas unit sealed into the midsole for cushioning, and until the Air Max it stayed hidden. Cutting a window into the foam turned the cushioning itself into a design feature, and the earliest units were the largest and most visible, which is what the Big Bubble name refers to. This is the '86 OG proportion rendered for golf, in red, a colourway that puts the loudest possible colour on the part of the shoe that was originally an engineering disclosure. Nike is not being subtle. It never was about Air.
Construction: Read this one at the sole. The visible Air unit sits in the heel behind a window in the midsole, sized to the original large-volume proportion rather than the slimmed versions that followed. The golf conversion is where it departs from the standard Air Max 1: expect a traction outsole built for turf grip and lateral stability through a swing rather than a flat street tread, and a weather-minded upper treatment appropriate to walking eighteen holes in wet grass. The upper keeps the classic panelled mudguard, quarter and Swoosh layering that makes the Air Max 1 legible from any angle, with red carried across the accent panels so the shoe reads hot against green ground.
Utility: On course, recipe one: cream or stone technical trousers with a clean break, a white polo, and a navy quarter-zip, letting the red sit as the only warm note against grass. Off course, recipe two: washed black denim, a grey sweatshirt and a green field jacket, where the golf outsole reads as a quiet detail rather than a costume. Air Max 1 lasts run slightly narrow in the toe, so consider a half size up if you wear a wide foot or thicker golf socks. Brush turf and grass stains off the same day, since chlorophyll sets into pale midsoles, and let the shoe dry fully between rounds rather than stacking wet wears.
Influence: Air Max models became staples of mainstream American youth dress from the 1980s and returned repeatedly through 1990s and 2000s casual and athleisure looks, which means the silhouette arrives on a golf course already carrying an enormous amount of non-golf meaning. That is the point of the exercise. Nike has spent its life moving equipment across contexts, from Bowerman's track shoes to a basketball line that became a hip hop uniform, and putting a big bubble Air Max on turf is the same manoeuvre applied to a sport with stricter dress conventions than most. Red makes the argument impossible to ignore from the next fairway.
