Origin: Designed by Peter Moore and released on 9 November 2019 as part of Nike's Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Muslin/Varsity Red/Royal/Taxi/Black. The Air Jordan line exists because Nike signed Michael Jordan in 1984 and then let Spike Lee, directing and appearing as Mars Blackmon, sell it as culture rather than equipment. Worth correcting the folklore you have heard: the NBA never banned the Air Jordan 1. The shoe cited under the league's uniform rule was the Nike Air Ship prototype, Nike paid the fines and built a campaign around it. The Mid sits below the original high in the hierarchy and has become the canvas the line uses for artist projects, which is exactly what Fearless was. Blue The Great's version treats the silhouette as a surface to paint on, which is a very different proposition from a straight retro in team colours.

Construction: This is a leather Air Jordan 1 Mid at heart: panelled upper, wings collar, Swoosh overlay, a cupsole with Nike Air cushioning underneath. Nike Air is a pressurised gas unit sealed into the midsole, the technology that arrived publicly with the 1987 Air Max and turned cushioning into a design feature rather than a hidden component. On an artist project the interest sits in the finishing rather than the engineering, so treat the graphic and hit panels as the fragile part and the tooling as the durable part. The Mid collar height gives you more ankle coverage than a low without the commitment of the high, which is why it wears easily under a cuffed trouser.

Utility: Let the graphic lead. Pair one with raw or mid wash denim, cuffed once above the collar, and a plain heavyweight tee so nothing competes. The second recipe is quieter: black wide leg trousers, a black knit, and the shoe as the only colour in the fit. Sizing on the Jordan 1 Mid runs long for many people, so go half down if you sit between sizes. Lace loosely if you want the tongue to sit forward. This is a dry weather shoe: painted and printed panels do not enjoy rain, and salt marks on leather set fast. Brush with a soft dry brush, spot clean with minimal water, and never put a leather Jordan through a machine cycle.

Influence: Jordan Brand grew out of the 1984 signing into a business of its own, and from the 1980s onward Nike basketball shoes became a status marker in urban and hip hop fashion before settling in as mainstream American youth dress. Artist collaboration is Nike's way of keeping that conversation moving without touching the silhouette itself. The brand's record here is not spotless: Nike SB's 2005 appropriation of Minor Threat's album art drew a public rebuke from Ian MacKaye and an apology, which is why properly credited artist partnerships matter to the people who buy them. Nike has also worked with fine artists directly, including Takashi Murakami on a Nike related digital work. The Fearless series sat in that same tradition of handing the shoe over.
