Origin: Released on 15 January 2025 and part of Hoka's Bondi 9 line. This release has a mesh upper in Drizzle/Downpour. Drizzle and Downpour is a weather-report colourway, two greys sitting one shade apart, and on the ninth Bondi it produces the most restrained version of Hoka's biggest road shoe. The Bondi is the model where the brand stops moderating and gives you its deepest ride, a direct descendant of the oversized outsoles two ex-Salomon trail runners built in Annecy in 2009 to make downhill running faster. Style code 1162011 DNP marks this greyscale execution. It is the pair to buy if you want the silhouette to be the loudest thing about the shoe and the colour to say nothing at all.
Construction: Bondi carries the most foam in the line, so the build exists to keep that quantity controlled. The stack is engineered around the brand's founding low weight to cushion ratio, the heel flares wide to broaden the landing platform, and the sidewall seats the heel inside the midsole in the bucket seat way Hoka describes as Active Foot Frame, which stops soft foam from feeling unstable. Rocker geometry rolls you forward so that depth does not become sluggishness. The upper is breathable engineered mesh with a plush collar. Two close greys across upper and midsole flatten the profile visually, which makes a very large shoe look considerably more discreet than it is.
Utility: Two recipes. Neutral styling: Drizzle and Downpour Bondi 9 with charcoal wide-leg trousers and a grey or black knit, a full tonal build where the sole shape provides the only contrast. Running: black shorts and any technical top, used for recovery days and long slow distance, which is what the deepest cushioned shoe in the line is for. Fit true to length and expect a broad, tall platform underfoot. Grey mesh hides less than black, so brush before wiping, spot clean with mild soap and a soft cloth, pull the insole out to dry, and never machine wash or heat dry.
Influence: Greyscale is the colour language of the fashion wave rather than the racing one. Once the maximal Hoka silhouette was read as the running world's answer to the chunky sneaker, the brand began working with fashion and streetwear partners, running projects through Brain Dead on the slip on Hopara, BEAMS on the Tor Ultra, and boutiques including Bodega. Those partners were interested in shape, not in colour blocking, and a tonal grey Bondi is the in-house version of that instinct. Underneath, the model still carries the authority of ultramarathon racing and the endorsement of healthcare workers who made these shoes standard on hospital floors.
