Origin: Released on 6 May 2025 and part of Hoka's Clifton line. This release has a jacquard upper in Black/Galactic Grey. Black over Galactic Grey is the Clifton 10 arranged for daily life rather than for a run club, which is why this pair sits in the casual half of the catalogue. The Clifton is the cushioned road daily trainer that carried Hoka's founding idea out of the mountains, an oversized cushioned outsole first built in Annecy so two former Salomon runners could descend faster, and turned it into something ordinary people could use. Splitting the shoe into a dark upper and a grey stack keeps the exaggerated sidewall legible without making it loud. You see the volume of the midsole clearly, but nothing about the colour asks to be looked at.
Construction: The Clifton is built around cushion without weight, the low weight to cushion ratio that has driven Hoka's engineering from the first oversized outsole. The house geometry, a low heel to toe drop under a rounded sole, rolls you into the next step, and that roll is what makes a soft shoe feel purposeful whether you are running or walking a city all day. The heel sits down inside the midsole walls instead of on top of them, which is where the settled feel comes from. Black upper with a grey stack is the low maintenance choice, though the foam edge still collects scuffs. Wipe it with a damp cloth and mild soap, brush dust off, and let it air dry.
Utility: Recipe one, dark casual: black jeans or wide trousers with a grey sweatshirt, letting the grey midsole tie the two together. Recipe two, technical layers: charcoal joggers, black shell jacket, and the shoe reading as the base of a full weather ready fit. It works for city walking, commuting, travel days, standing shifts and easy road mileage. Fit true to size with a thumbnail of room at the toe, and lace the last eyelet if you will be on your feet for hours. Because it will be worn as street footwear, unlace it properly instead of standing on the heel, and rotate pairs so the foam keeps its rebound.
Influence: Fashion is the third wave of the Hoka story and the Clifton is the shape it borrowed most. Once the maximal silhouette started reading as the running world's answer to the chunky sneaker, the brand found itself working with partners from outside sport, including Bodega on a boutique release, BEAMS on the Tor Ultra and Brain Dead on the slip on Hopara. A dark, greyed Clifton 10 is that crossover in its most usable form. It is the pair people buy knowing they will run in it occasionally and wear it constantly, and the colour choice is a wardrobe decision more than a performance one.
