Origin: Designed by Eric Avar and part of the Adapt BB line. This release has a flyklnit upper in Astronomy Blue/Royal Pulse/Spruce Aura. Astronomy Blue is a deep, saturated blue on the second generation of Nike's self lacing basketball shoe, and it is the clearest statement the brand makes about where its engineering instinct actually points. Nike has been an engineering company since 1964, when Bill Bowerman, a University of Oregon track coach, decided the shoes American runners were given were too heavy and started importing better ones under Blue Ribbon Sports with Phil Knight. Bowerman's next move was to pour rubber into his wife's waffle iron, which produced the tread that carried the 1972 Moon Shoe and the 1974 Waffle Trainer. Adapt BB 2.0 is that same impulse pushed into electronics: if the fit itself can be tuned, tune it. Astronomy Blue makes the machinery look deliberate rather than clinical.

Construction: The upper is a stretch knit bootie in Astronomy Blue with a lacing engine housed in the midsole that tightens the collar around the foot, controlled from the shoe or a phone, with a light ring signalling state. That changes the wearing logic entirely: there is no lace pressure to redistribute by hand, so the shoe either fits or it does not, and it holds that fit for the whole session. Nike Air remains the brand's cushioning idea, a pressurised gas unit sealed into the midsole rather than a foam that fatigues, and Flywire style cabling logic, holding the foot with minimal upper material, is the ancestor of what the motor does here. Treat the battery as a component, charge it before long wear, and keep the midsole housing dry.

Utility: Wear one: full technical, black nylon track pants with a taped seam, a navy half zip, blue on blue so the shoe reads as equipment. Wear two: street, mid blue raw denim with a white tee and an oversized grey hoodie, where the saturated blue pops against washed indigo instead of matching it. Occasion is casual to court adjacent, not formal, and never in heavy rain given the electronics. Fit runs true with a snug knit collar, so if you are between sizes take the larger and let the tightening do the work. Charge fully before storage, do not machine wash, wipe the knit with a barely damp cloth, and keep the shoe out of prolonged direct heat.

Influence: Nike's basketball authority is not marketing alone, it has been the official on court uniform supplier to the NBA, the WNBA and the NBA G League since 2017 under a deal signed in June 2015, extended for a further twelve years as announced in October 2024. That position is what makes a powered basketball shoe read as a league artefact rather than a gadget. The lineage sits with Michael Jordan, signed in 1984 and turned into a business of his own, and with LeBron James and Kevin Durant as signature athletes, the names that keep Nike's court credibility renewing. Astronomy Blue is the version of that story you can actually wear off court, technology visible enough to notice and quiet enough to pass.
