Astronomy Blue is a deep, saturated blue on the second generation of Nike's self lacing basketball shoe, and it is the clearest statement the brand makes about where its engineering instinct actually points. Nike has been an engineering company since 1964, when Bill Bowerman, a University of Oregon track coach, decided the shoes American runners were given were too heavy and started importing better ones under Blue Ribbon Sports with Phil Knight. Bowerman's next move was to pour rubber into his wife's waffle iron, which produced the tread that carried the 1972 Moon Shoe and the 1974 Waffle Trainer.
