Origin: Designed by Bill Bowerman and released on 10 October 2019 as part of Nike's Blazer line. This release has the black/black-anthracite colourway. This is the dark version of the collaboration that rebuilt Nike's plainest high top. The Blazer dates from the years after Nike ended its Onitsuka Tiger distribution in 1972 and began making shoes under its own name, a basketball model with almost no ornament beyond an oversized Swoosh. Black with Wolf Grey is the least decorative colourway in the sacai family and the hardest to read casually, because the doubled construction is hidden inside a near-monochrome palette rather than announced by contrast. Style code BV0072 002 identifies it. You notice the shoe's strangeness only when you look at the tongues and the second Swoosh, which is exactly the intended effect.

Construction: Everything on the shoe is duplicated: two tongues, two Swooshes, two eyestays and two sets of laces, offset over a stacked midsole that makes the profile longer and taller than an original Blazer. In black with Wolf Grey the layers are separated by texture rather than by colour, so the suede-feel panels, leather and mesh do the work that a bright palette would otherwise do. Style code BV0072 002 marks this version. The shoe is heavier than it looks and the doubled tongue changes the collar closure, so the ankle sits tighter than a standard Blazer Mid. Dark panels also make the offsets subtler, which is the point of choosing this over the pale colourway.

Utility: Recipe one: black tailored trousers with a charcoal knit and a long dark coat, where the shoe's extra height and length balance a heavy hem and nothing reads as sportswear. Recipe two: grey wide denim with a black hoodie, the casual version, where the Wolf Grey panels tie to the denim tone. City wear only, given the weight and the stacked sole. The doubled construction fits long, so try half a size down. Lace the outer set looser than the inner. Brush the suede-feel panels dry, wipe the leather with a damp cloth, and keep the light midsole clean because it is the one part that shows age on a black shoe.

Influence: Nike's product partnerships historically ran through ownership rather than design: distributing Onitsuka Tiger from 1964 to 1972, then buying Cole Haan, Bauer, Hurley, Converse, Starter and Umbro, most of which it later sold. The design collaborations that shape how the brand reads today invert that, handing over the archive to be taken apart in public. Where the pale version of this shoe puts the deconstruction on display, the black one keeps it private, which suits a different buyer entirely: someone who wants a considered shoe rather than a conversation. Nike has enough archive depth to serve both without diluting either, which is the real advantage of owning fifty years of patterns.
