Origin: Released on 29 October 2024 and part of the Tokuten line. This release has a leather upper in Black/White. Tokuten in Black White Gum is the most straightforwardly court coded shoe in this group. Tokuten is Japanese for score, and Onitsuka's own beginning was on the court: Kihachiro Onitsuka started the company in Kobe in 1949 making basketball shoes for Japanese youth, choosing the tiger for strength and agility. Black upper, white panelling and a gum sole is the oldest visual grammar in indoor sport, and putting it on a fuller, more substantial silhouette than the Mexico 66 gives the brand a genuinely different shoe rather than another colourway. The gum is what dates it correctly, because gum rubber belongs to gymnasium floors before it belongs to fashion.
Construction: This silhouette carries more upper, a taller sidewall and a heavier sole unit than the slim Mexico 66 flat, so it sits higher and feels more solid underfoot. The Tiger Stripes run as the main side panel, structuring the quarter while carrying the mark. The gum sole is the defining component: warm toned rubber that grips well on smooth indoor surfaces and picks up colour from dark floors over time. Black over white panelling keeps the shoe practical, since the black hides marks and the white sits mostly on protected areas. Expect a roomier forefoot than the flats and a break in period measured in wears rather than days.
Utility: Two recipes. First, loose black jeans with a white tee and a varsity jacket, a straight court reference where the gum sole ties to any tan or brown leather in the outfit. Second, grey heavyweight sweatpants with a black hoodie, where the shoe's volume balances the clothing. Because gum yellows with sunlight and heat, store this pair away from windows and never dry it on a radiator. Take your usual size and expect more forefoot room than a Mexico 66. Clean the gum with a damp cloth and mild soap only, and use a soft brush on the white panels rather than anything abrasive.
Influence: Onitsuka Tiger today is a fashion label, revived by Asics in 2002 after the name spent roughly twenty five years dormant following the 1977 merger that created Asics. It is not a performance brand: performance sits with Asics, and it is a different proposition again from Asics Tiger or Asics Sportstyle. Tokuten shows what that fashion positioning allows, which is a court silhouette built for how it looks rather than for how it plays. The business has grown hard on that footing, and Asics has announced the brand will operate through a newly created subsidiary, OT GROUP Corporation, from January 2027, across around one hundred and sixty countries.
